What medical clothing is most comfortable for working in the intensive care unit

Intensive care units (ICUs) differ in their specialisation, which is associated with different types of pathologies. Each of these areas has its own characteristics, but medical clothing for staff, regardless of specialisation, is highly hygienic and comfortable. Great demands are also placed on the composition of fabrics and orthopaedic characteristics of footwear, as the intensive care workers' shift can last up to 10-12 hours.

Non-restrictive clothing for intensive care units

The complexity of working conditions requires ICU doctors to wear professional clothing that

  • does not restrict movement;
  • ensures sufficient air exchange;
  • quickly removes excess moisture from the skin;
  • guarantees reliable protection against dangerous liquids, bacteria and viruses;
  • retains all its performance characteristics after repeated washing, high-temperature treatment, and disinfection with special products.

In addition to maximum comfort when wearing and performing the necessary procedures, such medical clothing is distinguished by

  • monochromatic colours (most often white, green or blue);
  • the absence of optional fittings on the front of the garment;
  • use of ties, Velcro, cuffs instead of buttons;
  • the use of a significant number of disposable products - shoe covers, gowns, coveralls, caps that completely cover the hair, gloves.

Breathable materials for medical clothing for intensive care staff

Textile blends for reusable elements of the suit are selected depending on the degree of danger to staff and patients.

"Breathable" properties can be achieved by combining different types of materials in the clothing. The main ones are as follows.

Natural cotton. The main advantages for medical clothing:

  • good ventilation properties;
  • high ability to absorb moisture (hygroscopicity 35-40%);
  • hygiene;
  • easy washing and ironing;
  • resistance of fibres to any organic solvents.

Synthesised polyester. Important qualities when used in medical clothing:

  • three times the density of cotton;
  • resistance to all types of external influences - mechanical, chemical, bacteriological;
  • antistatic, unlike other synthetics;
  • minimum specific gravity;
  • pleasant sensation when touched to the skin.

Polyurethanes (Spandex). Key performance characteristics:

  • ultra-thin thread, as it can be woven "inside" the structure of other fabrics;
  • maximum ventilation properties;
  • zero sensitivity to UFO radiation, chemicals, liquids with a high salt content (sweat);
  • a material that makes it possible to make medical clothing that does not wrinkle, does not stretch at the elbows and knees, and wears out twice as much.

How to choose a comfortable style for intensive care units

There are two main criteria when choosing: comfort and attractiveness.

Working in an intensive care unit is extremely difficult, as it involves working overtime. Therefore, medical clothing for staff:

should prevent skin rubbing, sweating, and inconvenience during active movement;
be chosen with such cut features of trousers, tunics, gowns, belts, sleeves, cuffs, etc. that allow you to hide the features of the figure.
